JO1 is a Japanese boy group formed through the reality competition show Produce 101 Japan, a spin-off of the South Korean television series Produce 101 which has attracted a large following, particularly in Asia, and given birth to popular groups of I.O.I, Wanna One, Iz*One, and X1. The series is noted for having no panel of judges, instead fully relying on the audience votes to determine the result, and for starting with a very large number of competitors, 101 to be precise, before narrowing that number down to a final 11 who will debut in the winning group. Unfortunately, the South Korean version is currently marred by a vote manipulation controversy, and in light of that, the production team of the Japanese version has stated in November 2019 that they are not affiliated with the South Korean production team and have a separate voting system, with votes analyzed by a group of third-party lawyers, assuring the validity of the show result and the authenticity of JO1 as the group formed from the show. The group is currently in the full gear of preparation mode for its debut, set on March 4th, 2020 with the single "PROTOSTAR".
As with most other groups born through Produce 101 series, JO1 is composed of 11 members. These members are the last standing contestants of the show after a series of eliminations and selected to be part of group during the final episode of the show on December 11th, 2019. However, unlike its South Korean counterparts which have specific time where the groups have to disbands and the members have to return to their original agencies, JO1 is slated to be a permanent group under the management of Lapone Entertainment. This is made possible as its members are all independent contestants without any tie to other entertainment agencies, meaning they will work together as long as they want and they can. Lapone Entertainment has also made a statement that the group's long term goal is to expand beyond its home base of Japan and to become a global group.
Much like the members themselves, the name JO1 is selected based on the input given by the audience. Among all of these audience's name submission, Lapone Entertainment picks JO1 as the winning name as it embodies the identity of the group the best. The "J" in JO1 refers to Japan as the country of origin of the group, while the "O1" refers to the first year of Reiwa period where the group's introduced for the first time.
Another unique thing that stands out from JO1 is that most of its members actually have zero to minimum experience in idol entertainment industry before. I will talk more about that in the future but for now I want to introduce them first so you can start to learn who's who. I have listed their profile, ordered by their age, below.
